By the numbers: July layoffs in North Carolina
Layoffs held relatively flat in the month of July, with 179 job cuts reported to the state of North Carolina, just a slight increase over the 149 reported in June.
It?s a vast improvement from July 2014, where 511 employees were handed pink slips, as well as from July 2013, where layoffs impacted 601 employees.
But the numbers are somewhat deceptive, as they come from WARN filings, which allow some cuts to fall through the cracks. When shuttering operations or laying off at least 500 employees,?

On Monday, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced a new TV and wireless phone service that will help integrate newly acquired DirecTV into its marketing plan. The offering launches nationwide on Aug. 10, and will provide customers the ability to watch television shows anytime on a TV, tablet, computer or smartphone.

The ownership of the 131 Main restaurant in Dilworth has sold the East Boulevard location for $2.7 million, but the restaurant will remain open.
Real estate records show East Blvd. Restaurant Partners sold the property to Colson Investments of Naples, Fla. The space is just shy of 11,000 square feet.
?The timing was just right from a real estate perspective,? says Joe Douglas, who owns 131 Main. He?s also part of the management for East Blvd. Restaurant Partners, which owned the property.
Venture for America brings two budding entrepreneurs to Charlotte
Max Haskin wasn?t excited about working in banking or consulting.
The recent University of Michigan grad wanted to work for a startup. He was intrigued by entrepreneurship in college after starting an app with a friend, but startups don?t have formal recruiting processes like banks or consulting firms do, and most new companies fail.
That brought Haskin to Venture for America. VFA is a nonprofit that describes itself as similar to Teach for America, but instead of placing recent grads in schools?
